This two‑day marriage workshop is designed to help couples identify the narratives shaping their relationship and align them with God's truth. Through self-reflection, one-on-one spousal exercises, group discussions, and narrative exploration, couples learn how their stories—both the ones that create tension and the ones that foster trust, joy, and closeness—influence communication, interpretation, and connection. The workshop is a tool that begins the ongoing work of taking thoughts captive to make them obedient to Christ—all in the effort to build spiritually resilient marriages that strengthen the overall church community.
This workshop does not replace counseling or therapy, nor is it a surface-level, one-size-fits-all approach. It’s a structured, interactive experience that helps couples self-explore, celebrate the good in their relationship, and reframe every part of their marriage story through a Christ‑centered, neuroscience-informed lens.

Every marriage is shaped by a collection of narratives—patterns of interpreting, responding, and relating that form the story a couple lives out together. Some narratives quietly create tension or misunderstanding. Others strengthen trust, joy, and emotional closeness. Both matter, and both deserve to be understood.
Narratives influence how couples communicate, how they read each other’s intentions, and how they navigate moments of connection or conflict. When challenging patterns go unnamed, they can feel confusing or frustrating. When life‑giving patterns go unnoticed, they often remain underappreciated. But once recognized, both patterns become opportunities for clarity, growth, and deeper intimacy.
Helping couples uncover their marital narratives helps them see:
Narratives matter because they reveal the story beneath the surface—the story God desires to redeem, strengthen, and align with His truth.

Through individual pre‑work completed before attending the workshop and a structured two‑day event, couples engage in a thoughtful blend of teaching, reflection, shared practice, and group discussion designed to help them understand and strengthen their marital story with biblical truth. The workshop is interactive, communal, and deeply encouraging, yet provides a space for couples to privately explore their narratives together, giving them time to recognize and celebrate what is working well and gently identify and plan for what may need attention.
Couples attending the workshop will experience:

Whether couples are seeking deeper connection, navigating areas of tension, or simply wanting to strengthen what is already good, JOY Narratives is designed to be accessible and meaningful for all marriages. It engages couples in every season of life, offering space for each spouse to understand and enrich their personal story while giving each couple a clearer understanding of their shared story. With this collective awareness, couples walk away from the experience with a renewed vision of how God is shaping their relationship.
The JOY Narratives workshop serves:

The narrative profiles on this site can be used to help couples name some of the patterns shaping their relationship—both the positive and the negative. Each profile offers language for understanding how personal history, emotional responses, and relational habits form the story a couple lives out together.
Within the workshop setting, these profiles become even more meaningful. Teaching, personal reflection, and shared exercises help couples see how their individual narratives interact, where their strengths naturally support one another, and where certain patterns may be creating misunderstanding or distance.
The profiles do not label or diagnose. They simply illuminate what is already present so couples can celebrate what is healthy, gently explore what needs attention, and recognize how God is shaping their marriage.
Used together with the workshop’s Christ‑centered teaching and practical tools, our narrative profiles give couples a peek into possible patterns in their relationship—helping them recognize themes that may be influencing their interactions.
